Cardiff-born, but Freddie Smart was snapped by Huddersfield in 1925 following his performances for Torquay United in rugby union. After spending five years there, he moved to Wakefield, where his try scoring exploits were second-to-none and he led Trinity’s try-scoring charts for three years running between 1930 and 1932. At Wakefield, he scored 94 tries in his 200 appearances (199 on the wing) from 1930 to 1937. He retired in 1937 and joined the Wakefield coaching staff.
