Only the second Australian-born player to turn out for Wales, David Luckwell played against his birth nation in the famous 2000 World Cup semi-final where we, for an hour, gave the Kangaroos a scare. Born in Sydney, David started his pro career at the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs club, making 57 appearances in their reserve side in the Sydney Premier League. He spent four seasons playing club rugby league in England, three with Hull Kingston Rovers and one with Batley Bulldogs. However he contracted compartment syndrome in his left thigh in 2003, forcing him to retire at aged only 27 . He moved back to Australia and did a masters degree in fire engineering. He went on to use this skill to become a fire engineer. His only contact with RL now is watching his team Sydney Roosters every week.
