Reginald G. Lloyd, also known by the nickname of "Wolla" was born in 1917 in Resolven and played rugby union for his local club. He turned professional with Keighley in 1937 aged just 19, and was the youngest player ever to appear in a Wembley Final and a try scorer in their Challenge Cup Final defeat to Widnes. However despite being one of eight Welsh players in the Keighley side that day, he didn't remain with the club that long and quickly moved on to Castleford. There, he made 248 appearances, scoring 59 tries and helped Castleford to a 1938-39 Yorkshire League win. During World War II, he was a Corporal in the Army and played left wing for Northern Command XIII against a Rugby League XIII at Thrum Hall, Halifax in 1942.
