William Frederick Hughes started his rugby in South Wales playing for Swansea and Llanelli. He moved to Cheltenham in 1936, where his brother Emlyn would have joined him had he not chosen to sign for St Helens that year. Fred did eventually choose to turn professional with Barrow, also playing for Workington Town and then Liverpool Stanley during his career. He played for Wales after the war, whilst his older brother Emlyn Hughes won caps before conflicts. He named his son after his uncle, and that son eventually became famous for playing football for Liverpool and England. Fred died on January 19th 1976 aged 63.
