Donald Gullick played for his native Pontypool and Monmouthshire before turning professional with St Helens in 1950, scoring on his debut versus Italian side Turin. He made 140 appearances and scored 42 tries. He won Championship, Lancashire Cup and League medals with Saints, plus nine caps for Wales, and had such a pain threshold that he once drove from Leeds with a broken collar-bone, and made light of a serious facial injury after an accident with a lathe. He generally played centre but was known to turn out on the wing when coach Jim Sullivan saw fit. Don was renowned as a bone crunching tackler with good distribution skills. He signed for Leigh in 1955, staying there for three years, but during that time, he went on loan to Leeds, making 15 appearances and scoring eight tries. After retiring from playing, he coached at Widnes and Liverpool City in rugby league and also at West Park and Newton-le-Willows rugby union clubs. Don served in the RAF before becoming a teacher, and taught at Rivington Road, Central Modern and Ashton Grammar schools. Don returned to Torfaen in 1980 and eventually battled against Parkinson's disease for several years. He died in the county on 14 April 2000.
