Bernard Gould began his rugby career with his local club, Penarth RFC. He then played for Glamorgan Police and later Aberavon, where he won a county cap. He also swapped the police force for Port Talbot docks, working as a labourer and coal tipper. It was his form for Aberavon that alerted the Leeds scouts who signed him for £100. During the First World War he joined the Coldstream Guards and was demobbed in 1919 where he continued with Leeds. He won his first Welsh cap in January 1921, a defeat to England and a month later played in the infamous Welsh international that never was. He helped Leeds to a Yorkshire Cup win later that year, as they beat Dewsbury 11-3, before joining Wakefield Trinity, with 61 Leeds appearances and two tries to his record. He stayed at Belle Vue for four years and made 102 appearances, scoring six tries and kicking one goal. He won a further Yorkshire Cup medal when Wakefield beat Batley 9-8 in 1924. In addition to rugby, he was a professional boxer. Outside of sport, he was the landlord of the Commercial Inn public house, Thornes Lane, Wakefield from 1923 until 1932, then landlord at the Templar Hotel public house in Vicar Lane, Leeds. He retired aged 70 in 1963 and died less than two years later on Fenruary 20 1965 in Leeds.
