Brian Gregory was born in January 1948 in Wigan, growing up just a stone's throw from Central Park. After starting as a youngster at Salford with his brother Allan, he moved to Warrington before making a first team appearance and then enjoyed a successful career, not just in England but in Australia, where he spent the 1977 and 1978 seasons with Corrimal Cougars in the Illawarra Rugby League Premiership. He played 128 games as a second row forward for Warrington over four seasons, including the club's most successful season in history, 1973/74, when Wire won the Championship, the Challenge Cup, the Captain Morgan Trophy and the John Player Trophy. He also played for Lancashire twice. He retired in 1979 after making a total of 240 UK first class appearances. His final club was Wakefield Trinity. A plasterer by trade and also worked as a telephone engineer, but after his rugby career was over he joined the prison service, working in Wakefield and at Risley. He also kept up his interest in RL by coaching regularly in the community game, and was on holiday in Tenerife when he died of a heart attack, his second in the space of a few months, on January 16 2002 aged just 53.
