Rhymney-born, Berwyn Jones played for his home-town rugby union club in the early sixties and was also an accomplished sprinter. A part of the Welsh 4*110 yards relay team who won the Bronze medal in the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia, he was the British 100 yards champion and the British 100 metres record holder with a time of 10.3 seconds. However he was snapped up by Wakefield Trinity in 1964 putting an end to his Olympic ambitions as he had been highly tipped to participate in the 1968 Games in Mexico. With Wakefield, he played 189 times scoring 47 tries. He joined Bradford Northern (now Bradford Bulls) in 1966 for a £3,000 fee and scored 26 tries in the 1967-68 season. His final move was to St Helens in 1969 where he scored just two tries in four games before retiring after just six years in the sport. Internationally, he won three caps for the Great Britain, all against France, scoring one try per game. Because of this record, he was selected to tour with the Lions to Australia and New Zealand in 1966 and despite scoring 24 tries in 15 tour matches, he wasn’t picked for any of the five test matches down under. He also played for a Commonwealth XIII and Other Nationalities. He was living in Ross-on-Wye when he died on Friday 12th January 2007, aged 66, after suffering from motor neurone disease.
