Jim Bacon first played professionally for Leeds under the assumed name of Arthur James, a play on his name, against Bradford on 14 December 1918. He played in the match after coming to visit his friend Dai Lewis. He eventually signed professional terms a year later after having played for Pill Harriers and Cross Keys in rugby union. He made his Great Britain debut before he played for Wales, after being selected for the 1920 Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand, playing in all six tests. He made his Wales debut in 1921. As part of his 276 appearances for Leeds, he helped them to a Yorkshire Cup Final win against Dewsbury in 1921, where they won 11-3, and captained Leeds to a 28–3 victory over Hull FC in the 1923 Challenge Cup Final. After scoring 121 tries and kicking 20 goals for Leeds, he joined Castleford as player coach in 1928. He played 41 games for them, scoring seven tries. He went on to become trainer-manager at Bramley, whilst also working as a pub landlord. He stayed in the role on-and-off until 1939 and later moved to the West Country to run a pub. He died in Weston-Super-Mare in 1968 aged 72.
