Richie Eyres was one of three players who represented England against Wales in 1992 before switching to Wales after the grandparent rule was introduced in 1994. He played for Wales in the 1995 World Cup and was also a part of the European Championship winning squad earlier that year. He also won nine caps for Great Britain. Starting off with community club Widnes St Maries, Richie went onto have a long career with Widnes where he scored 60 tries in 294 appearances, famously scoring a try in their 30–18 victory over Canberra Raiders in the 1989 World Club Challenge at Old Trafford. He transferred to Leeds in 1994 where he scored 17 tries in 66 appearances. When rugby union went openly professional, he was signed by Neath in the hope of becoming a dual-code international, but he only stayed there for the 1996-97 season. Returning to rugby league, he played for Sheffield Eagles, Warrington Wolves, Swinton Lions, Rochdale Hornets and a final spell at Widnes Vikings, before finishing his career in 2000 back in rugby union with Coventry. Since retiring, Richie has been involved in junior and schools RL coaching in Widnes, with sides like the Crosfields U11s and St. Gregory's RC High School.
