Neil Fraser Cowie became Wales' 37th captain when he led us in the both matches in the 1999 Tri-Series. He qualified for Wales via the grandparents rule after it was introduced in 1994, making his Wales debut in the 1995 European Championship where he played in both matches in Wales' trophy win. Also playing in the World Cup later that year, plus in the 1996 World Nines, Neil also won three caps for Great Britain. Starting his career at Todmorden ARLFC, he signed for Rochdale Hornets in 1986 and went on to make 16 appearances in his first season. Over the next four seasons he became a regular in the Rochdale pack and after 133 appearances and 23 tries, he moved to Wigan at the end of the 1990-91 season. His first winners medal was in their 1991 World Club Challenge victory against the visiting Penrith Panthers. He was later selected to go on the 1992 Great Britain Lions tour of Australia and New Zealand but didn't play in a test on that tour. He eventually made 330 appearances for Wigan, which included 143 in Super League, and scored 34 tries. His winners medal haul with Wigan eventually totalled one Lancashire Cup, two Challenge Cup, three Regal Trophy, two World Club Challenge, five Premiership Final wins, and six league titles which included one in the guise as Super League. He retired at the end of the 2001 season to concentrate on a career in the restaurant business.
