Born in Wakefield, his great-grandparents were Welsh. A junior with Eastmoor Dragons as well as Yorkshire, Matt joined Bradford Bulls and played for them during their Super League era, making 26 of his 30 top level appearances for that club. After short spells with Halifax, Harlequins RL, Barrow Raiders and Wakefield Trinity, he joined Featherstone Rovers for the 2013 season, staying there for three years and making 75 appearances. He started playing for the Sheffield Eagles in 2016 and in his second season he was appointed captain. In 2021 he announced his retirement after 113 appearances for the club, but in 2023, he made a comeback with Doncaster.
