Diccon Edwards played just 16 first class rugby league games in his career, his 12th being his Welsh cap. He qualified for Wales through his Welsh father. London-born, he moved to Yorkshire as a child and first played rugby union for Selby RUFC at aged six. A member of the club’s Yorkshire Cup-winning U15 and U17 sides, he was educated at Pocklington School and played for England U16s, 18s, 21s and Colts. He signed for Leeds Tykes and made his Yorkshire début during the 1992-93 season. He also toured South Africa with the North of England in 1995 and played for the North against Queensland. A season with Leicester Tigers followed in 1993-94 before he joined Newport, with the aim of playing for Wales in rugby union – he did train with the squad but only managed a Wales A cap, playing once against Ireland. So he briefly switched to rugby league before going back to union with Wakefield. He retired from playing aged 28 due to a neck injury and turned to rugby union coaching, starting within community grassroots as a Sports Development Officer and head coach at his original club Selby. He was appointed as Academy Manager at Leeds, succeeding Stuart Lancaster (and coached in the RFU U20 set-up). He was appointed head coach at Leeds in 2011, staying there for two seasons (plus coached the RFU Championship XV), before being appointed as a performance lead at the English Institute of Sport. A Paralympic Coach Advisor for UK Sport during the Rio 2016 cycle and into the Tokyo 2020 cycle, and then Head of Coach Development at UK Sport, following a brief spell on the coaching staff at Nottingham RUFC, in 2022 he was appointed as Performance Director of British Wheelchair Basketball.
