Dennis Curling was born in Bishop’s Stortford in Hertfordshire, grew up in Essex and moved to Wales when he was 10. He started playing rugby at his new home of Port Talbot and soon signed for Aberavon. There he set a record in a Welsh Cup game against Nantymoel by scoring seven tries in a game. He was soon scouted by rugby league and turned professional with Aberavon, and alongside Clive Jones and Dai Jenkins, was one of three Welshmen to make his debut in one game. He and Jenkins each scored a try. He played for Warrington for five years, making 132 appearances and scoring 35 times. He later returned to Wales and became a newsagent in Maesteg.
