Richard Johnston became an accomplished rugby union winger in his youth, playing for Wales at age groups. He started and finished his rugby union career at Neath, playing for them between 1998 and 2000 and then from 2003 and 2006, playing for Pontypridd in between. He was also selected twice for Scarlets in their first season of regional rugby union. He played in European competitions with both clubs and won Welsh Premiership and Welsh Cup winners medals. Tasting rugby league for the first time in 2004, he was selected for Wales Dragonhearts and helped them to Four Nations success. He was then selected for the full Wales side a year later, meaning he was spotted by new professional side Celtic Crusaders. He played just 12 times in the first season, scoring two tries, his appearances limited due to suffering a broken arm against Barrow in July, but was fit again for Wales' Rugby League World Cup qualifier against Scotland in October. In 2007, he helped Crusaders win the National League Two title, scoring 12 tries in 17 games. He left the Crusaders towards the end of the 2007 season to join the police force in Reading, feeling it was time for a new career path outside of rugby.
