Match Report

Scot Wheelchair

By Ian Golden

Wales opened the Wheelchair Tri-Nations competition in style with a commanding 90-12 win over Scotland.

An offside from the opening play set the tone for Scotland’s day, with Stuart Williams wheeling over for the opening try from the resulting set. Stephen Halsey converted.

Wales were 18-0 up in seven minutes after Scotty Trigg-Turner crossed for the second, soon followed by Halsey, who duly converted both.

Trigg-Turner went over for Wales’ fourth on 15 minutes before Halsey scored three more, converting all four.

Andrew Higgins added a penalty before Scotland got on the board through a Michael Mellon try converted by Daniel Grant.

But Wales finished the first half well as they scored again through Stuart Williams. Higgins missed the conversion and Wales were 48-6 up at the break.

They scored two further tries in the first five minutes of the second half, first through Higgins, then Lucie Roberts, with Higgins converting both.

It was 72-6 on 57 minutes after tries from Mark Williams, converted by Higgins, then Jason Owen, converted by Mark Williams.

Scotland hit back after a Dave Anderson try on 68 minutes that Mellon converted, but Wales finished well.

Richard Carver celebrated his Welsh debut by scoring his country’s 13th try of the game.

Gary Taylor converted, before adding another try of his own and improving that to bring up 90 points.
