Match Report
England
England's victory over Wales at Oldham on Saturday was their first since 1934-35, but the Welshmen, who, for the first time since 1934-35, were without Sullivan, the Wigan full back, were an unfortunate lot.
A claim for a try by Williams, the Salford wing man, was disallowed in the second half, and twice in the last five minutes Williams was held inches only from the England line; indeed, the last tackle of the game was one which hurled Williams Into touch with the line only a foot away.
England won 1 goal, tries (8 points) 1 goal 1 try (5 points). Their strong men, as usual, were their forwards, and at Watersheddings It was afternoon for forward play. The English six held a mastery the scrummaging until mid-way through the second half, and when that scrummaging advantage departed they rose in their might in the loose —first to batter at the Welsh line, and then, when the Welsh backs and forwards made their last effort, to do great things In tackling, stopping and rushing.
Better packs have carried England's colours — there is no doubt at all about that — but few England packs have fought mora tenaciously. Irving was inspiration. Tattersfield. Moore and others rallied great lead, and Wales were kept from developing the power they might have had with many clever and experienced players In their ranks. Tracey was sturdy man at stand-off half In England's back division in which there was brilliant full back — Belshaw, who went through the game without putting foot wrong.
Foster scored the try that gave Wales lead which was increased when Jones, the new Welsh full back, kicked the goal. Moore, England's loose forward, scored try when he took an Inside pass from Peake and Wales led 5-3 at half-time. The only try the second half was well got by Waring, the St. Helens centre, who was able to hold loose ball and dodge cleverly to make the touch for Belshaw to kick a good goal. There were 5.000 spectators and receipts £234 - satisfactory figures In the circumstances.
