35 v 9
Headingley Rugby Stadium, Leeds
Referee : Frank Renton
An international match between England and Wales Northern Union players was played yesterday at Leeds, before 13,000 spectators. The Welshmen are players engaged by English clubs, and the superiority over them of the home talent was demonstrated in a striking degree. The Welsh forwards fairly held their own, but their backs were badly outclassed, especially at centre three-quarter and at full back.
In the first half England scored tries through Hilton and Parkin, and Rhodes kicked two goals, while Gronow kicked two goals, and Williams scored a try for Wales, England thus leading at the interval by 9 points to 7.
In the second hail the Welsh defence broke down badly. Tries were scored by Owen, Clark, Parkin, Stone, and Brittain, Rhodes kicking a goal for each. The only point obtained by Wales was a goal by Gronow from a penalty. The winners passed and ran finely, but were flattered by the Welshmen's poor tackling.
No timings for the scorers are available, so the scoring sequence below is not in a complete order.
