Born in Wakefield, Martin qualifies for Wales through his heritage as his grandfather, who was an accomplished Welsh international amateur boxer, was born in Monmouth. He is a long-term sufferer of Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) with Diplegia which effects his legs and minor weakness co-ordination in his arms which has resulted in him being a full time wheelchair user. Martin has played multiple variations of Wheelchair Rugby as well as competing at multiple tournaments and events in Wheelchair Athletics including Shot, Discus and Javelin. An avid sports participant whilst in school, Martin rekindled his love for sport following watching the 2008 Paralympics on TV. Since then, he has gone on to coach various different wheelchair sports. When Wheelchair Rugby League started in the UK in 2008, Martin started his playing career at Wigan, before moving on to Mersey Storm, Bury Jigsaw and Liverpool Lions, which is where he took on more of an admin role as he assisted with coaching. Following Liverpool's folding, Martin moved to North Wales Crusaders before joining Warrington Wolves as a player and assistant coach ahead of their launch in 2019. In 2012 Martin actually made his international debut, alongside his son, Declan, for Scotland at the inaugural Wheelchair Rugby League Four Nations in Hull.
