Born and brought up in Cardiff, Joe Mahoney didn't join the capital club until after World War II. He served in the RAF during the conflict and played for them in representative games, as well as for Northampton and East Midlands. After just 15 games for Cardiff, he was offered professional forms by Oldham so he switched codes. He made 67 appearances in three years there, scoring 14 tries, before moving on to Dewsbury. The family continued to live in the Manchester area and his son John Mahoney went on to help Swansea City to promotion to the old First Division and play 51 times for the Wales football team. Joe died on September 14, 2005.
