Len Orchard was the seventh son from a close-knit mining family. He left school at 14 and followed his brothers down the pit. He played rugby union for Newbridge and also represented Monmouthshire but was given the opportunity to turn professional in 1934 when he was signed by Keighley RLFC and won his only Welsh cap. In Keighley, he started work as a tyre fitter before transferring to work on the buses where he also played rugby league for the bus firm's team. When he was in his late 50s, he took up a job at Haggas textile mill where he remained until he retired. He died at Airedale General Hospital, Steeton, after a short illness on January 2, 2002.
