A noted sprinter in his youth, who took part in the prestigious Welsh Powderhall races, Dennis Madden was a rugby union player with Aberavon before turning professional with London club Acton and Willesden for £500 in June 1935. However he wasn't in the English capital for long. His excellent form meant interest from northern sides and Huddersfield signed him for £800 in November of the same year. He even played in a Great Britain trial at the time, but in the end was only capped by Wales. He finished third in the national try-scoring chart in 1936–37 and second in 1937–38, each time scoring 32 times. Later in 1938, he scored a try and kicked a goal in Huddersfield's Yorkshire Cup Final win. In early 1939, he requested to go on the transfer list and it was Leeds who snapped him up for a then club record £1,250. He remained there until March 1940, when like with many other Welshmen at the onset of the war, he returned to Wales. In 1944, he helped the club out when they were short of players and ended up with 22 tries from 37 appearances for Leeds. He returned to live in Aberavon, and died there in 1967.
