Emlyn Hughes is a famous name, which many may associate with his nephew who played football for Liverpool and England, but Emlyn Hughes senior was an excellent sportsman in his own right. Both he and his younger brother Fred, Emlyn junior's father, were Wales rugby league internationals. Starting his rugby in New Dock Stars, before signing for Llanelli, Emlyn senior turned professional with St Helens in 1936, this after playing in a Welsh Rugby Union trial and was unlucky not to have been selected. Emlyn went on to make 71 appearances for Saints, scoring 16 tries and kicking 5 goals before moving to Huddersfield for a brief spell. Emlyn moved to London in 1939 and operated as a Tank Assembler during World War II. He stayed in that area (apart from making one more appearance for St Helens when visiting his brother in Barrow in 1943) and died in Ealing in December 1980, aged 70.
