Melville De Lloyd was born at 12 Commercial Road, Resolven. He was one of seven children - four sons and three daughters. He and two of his brothers all played for Resolven RFC with Mel going on to play for Llanelli aged 17. He was spotted by Eddie Waring who brought him to Warrington. He made an immediate impact and won a Lancashire Cup medal in 1937. Following many successful seasons for Warrington where he scored 27 tries and kicked 7 goals and 27 drop goals in 176 appearances, Mel transferred to Keighley, finishing his playing days with that club in the 1951-52 seasons. He had previously guested with Keighley, Wakefield and Hunslet during World War II. It was during his first spell at Keighley that he made the headlines - during a game against Hull on Saturday 3 January 1942, he was sent off after disputing a decision by the referee, Mr L. Dolby, who then alleged that Mel had later "struck him". He was suspended indefinitely before being lifted 10-months later. His Keighley career saw him score 28 tries and kick 125 goals in 186 games. He eventually returned to Wales and died on May 22 1985. He is buried alongside his wife May in St. David’s Cemetery, Resolfen. His great-nephew, Mike Knight, went onto play Wheelchair Rugby League for Wales.
