Ernest William Hopper started his rugby at Maesteg and was soon made captain. He trialed for Wales in 1947 but didn't ever make the squad and turned professional with Warrington in December 1948. However after just five appearances, he broke his ankle and wasn't ever selected again. So he was transferred to Leeds in early 1950. There he spent eight successful seasons, winning a Challenge Cup medal in 1957 when they beat Barrow 9-7 at Wembley. After 227 appearances, 15 tries and one goal for Leeds, he joined Dewsbury during the 1957-58 season - his final club before retiring. He remained in Yorkshire and died in Castleford on September 30th 2008 aged 82.
