He also made three appearances for Great Britain Academy during his time at Leeds. His professional club career began at Leeds Rhinos when he made his Super League debut aged just 16. When he left Headingley, Garreth was quickly snapped up by Shaun McRea at Hull FC. He had been impressed with Garreth when he was on loan at Gateshead Thunder in Super League in 1999, for whom Garreth has the distinction of being the first ever British player to score for the club. He spent eight seasons at Hull, scoring 24 tries in 164 appearances and helped them to win the 2005 Challenge Cup. Transferring to Warrington Wolves for 2009, he made scored 19 tries in 134 appearances over five seasons, helping them to win three Challenge Cup Finals. Whilst with Warrington, he was named in the 2011 Betfred Super League Dream Team. He had brief spells at Bradford Bulls, Hull, Castleford Tigers and Featherstone at the end of his playing career. Since his playing retirement, he was appointed player welfare officer, later head of youth and in an assistant coach’s role at Salford Red Devils, before re-launching and heading the Rugby League Players Association in January 2018 with backing from the GMB Union. He was appointed head of rugby at Leigh Centurions ahead of their 2021 Super League season.
