Lt. Leonard Constance RNVR to give him his full title started playing senior rugby whilst serving in the Royal Navy during World War II. There, he turned out for Portsmouth, the Royal Navy, Hampshire County and when closer to home, Bristol or Newport. He first played for St Helens in 1946 under the psudonem "Johnson" and after that one game, played for a Combined Services XV at Bordeaux. Len was actually released from the Royal Navy the day before his first official match for the Saints against Leeds. After 66 appearances for St Helens, seven tries and four goals, he signed for Dewsbury in 1949 for £2,000, staying there for two seasons. He did look into coaching, and was appointed head coach of Dewsbury on Tuesday 10 July 1951. But 21-days later, he placed himself on the transfer list and joined Wigan, where he won a Lancashire League title in his lone season of 1951-52. After scoring 12 tries and nine goals in his 31 Wigan appearances, he joined Wakefield Trinity, where he made just 12 appearances, scoring one try. Len taught at Rivington Road School in St. Helens, where another Welsh St. Helens player, Don Gullick also taught. He died back in his home Welsh county in October 1990, aged 67.
