A strong forward in both codes, Karl Hocking first made his name in the union game professionally with sides like Llanelli, Tondu, Bridgend Ravens and Caerphilly. With at least 148 tries to his name, he was once noted as being the forward who had scored the most tries in WRU professional leagues history. He started playing rugby league with Bridgend Blue Bulls in 2003 and was an immediate success, playing in that year's Welsh Grand Final winning side. He was snapped up by Carcassonne and played in their 2003-04 season before becoming a Wales Students international. In late July / early August, he played two games for Workington Town, the second being less than a week before returning to Bridgend to play in their second Grand Final winning side. He missed out on the 2005 win but he did win the first of his Wales Dragonhearts caps that year as well as his lone Wales men's side cap. In 2006, he joined the newly formed Celtic Crusaders side and played in 15 of their games, scoring nine tries. However he wasn't kept on for the 2007 season and returned to local rugby union and league, playing in that year's Grand Final win for Bridgend over Newport Titans. From 2012-18, he coached Maesteg RFC. He's since played Masters Rugby League for Cardiff Blue Dragons and has concentrated on his medical career where he's the Lymphoedema Children and Young People Lead for Wales.
