Tom Woods was the first of only two senior players to play rugby union for England and rugby union for Wales. Welsh-born, he served in the Royal Navy at the end of World War I and represented their side, as well as Devonport Services. It was there that he was first selected for England, the first of his five caps. He later returned to his native Pontypool and it was while playing for them that he was signed by Wigan, turning professional in 1921, alongside his team-mate Wilf Hodder. He played 84 times for Wigan, scoring 14 tries, playing in the Championship Final win over Oldham in 1922. He also won a Lancashire Cup winners medal later that year.
