Alex Givvons started playing rugby as a nine-year-old at Holy Cross School in Newport. He captained Monmouthshire Schools’ XV and began his club career at 17 with Pill Harriers, but instead of going onto play for Newport RFC, he turned out for Cross Keys. He signed for Oldham in 1933, where he played at loose forward or scrum half. The second black player to turn out for Wales, he finished on the winning side in all six of his games between 1936 and 1939. He twice toured France with Great Britain but didn't ever win a test cap for them. He played 241 times for Oldham, continuing to give many more years service as a member of both the coaching and back room staff after his return from Huddersfield. In January 1995, sixty-two years after his arrival, he performed the unveiling of the initial Oldham R.L. Hall of Fame. He died in Oldham on June 14 2002. A district of Oldham, known as Givvons Fold, is named after him. His son Alec was also a rugby league player and following that, became a referee.
