John qualifies for Wales through his grandfather, who was born in Rumney, Cardiff. He grew up playing rugby union when he was able-bodied, playing for Durham City. When he was confined to a wheelchair, he started playing wheelchair basketball for the Mohawks and Durham University. In 2025, one of his friends from basketball was playing for York in Wheelchair Rugby League and suggested he come watch a game. After that, he signed up to play for the club and was first named in a Wales squad in 2026 ahead of that year's World Cup.
