Welsh-qualified through his Ynys Môn-born mother, Gareth started playing Wheelchair Rugby League with Wakefield Trinity in 2024, before moving to Sheffield Eagles in Super League a year later. He got into rugby league through his son Sid, starting as a coach at his running club Crigglestone All Blacks, when Sid was just six-years-old. After 10 years there, they both moved to Dearne Valley Bulldogs. During his time coaching, he volunteered with Wakefield Trinity Community Foundation and in 2019, became the coach for the Learning Disability team, remaining in that post for six years. It was during that time that he and his son both started playing the Wheelchair game. Gareth was first named in the Wales A squad for the match against UK Armed Forces in March 2026.
