Born in 1881, William Strother Thomas first played professionally with Oldham in 1903, but after just nine appearances and one try with the Roughyeds, he transferred for Salford. There he spent 18 years and made 501 appearances, scoring 99 tries and 68 goals. He was part of their League Championship win in 1913-14. He died in 1963.
