Rees Thomas started out in rugby union with his local side Maesteg RFC. He served in the Royal Navy around the end and just after World War II and this posted him to the south of England where he played for Devonport Services and Cornwall. He turned professional with Swinton in September 1949 and made 218 appearances for the club, scoring 15 tries. He transferred to Wigan in 1956 and won two successive Challenge Cup winners medals with them, in 1958 and 1959, winning the Lance Todd trophy for player of the match in the former when they beat Workington Town. He played 102 times for Wigan scoring five tries and kicking one goal. He later went on to coach Swinton. He died in March 1984, aged 57.
