George Owens, also known by the nickname of "Dodger" was initially a rugby union player for Swansea, but following a meeting with a Wigan RLFC representative at the Bush Hotel, Swansea on Sunday 28 September 1913, he and his Swansea half-back partner Sidney Jerram were each signed for £180 down payment, guaranteed win bonuses, and jobs for £2 per week cash. Whilst his Wigan career was interrupted by war-time, he still managed 221 appearances, scoring 55 tries and kicking eight goals, by the time he transferred to St Helens in 1928. Not long before he joined Saints, he led Wigan to a Championship Final win. as they beat St Helens in 1926. He also helped them to a Lancashire League in 1913–14, 1914–15, 1920–21, 1922–23, 1923–24 and 1925–26. He was also a Lancashire Cup winner with Wigan in 1922. He played seven matches for the Saints between January and March 1928, scoring two tries. He was a Bulider's Labourer and in 1939 he was living in Haverfordwest. He died in December 1978, aged 84.
