William Hopkins started his rugby at Bridgend RFC before turning professional with Wigan in 1904. Whilst there he played for Other Nationalities against England. He played just 15 times for Wigan, kicking two goals, and joined Huddersfield for the 1905-06 season, staying there two years before moving back to Wales to help form the new Aberdare Northern Union side.
