Starting his rugby at Swansea RFC, William Islwyn "Izzy" Davies turned professional for the start of the 1934-35 season, signing for St Helens. Described as "a powerful running threequarter", he played 105 matches for Saints, scoring 39 tries and kicking 48 goals equalling 213 point hauls. He left in March 1937 to join Warrington where he scored 57 tries in 69 appearance. This included Wire's then "Most Tries In A Season" record with 34 tries scored during the 1938–39 season. The record was later broken by Brian Bevan. Izzy stayed in Warrington until his death in June 1997, aged 85.
