With over 25 years' experience as a sports writer, Ian's first published work about rugby league was a 1996 article for a Christian newspaper talking about Va'aiga Tuigamala's faith. He first wrote about Welsh rugby league in 2002 and was asked to "fill in" for the then media manager Swansea-based Gareth Jones a year later. Chairman of Cardiff Demons from 2003-05, he then worked as media manager for Celtic Crusaders in its first four years. Following their move north, he transferred to South Wales Scorpions and continued with WRL. He has now reported on every one of Wales' international sides, having travelled around the world to do so. He was media manager for Wales Wheelchair in the 2022 World Cup, and will be doing the same in the 2026 edition in Australia. He managed the media for Wales and assisted other nations in both Commonwealth 9s tournaments, 2014 in Glasgow and 2018 in Brisbane.

Also in charge of all rugby data for worldwide organisation Sportradar, in 2017, he founded and is co-director of Sporting Records Online Ltd, assisting Scotland Rugby League, South Wales Jets and Midlands Hurricanes as well as a number of rugby union clubs. In other sport, he also reports on Wales football for community radio station GTFM, and as a big cricket fan, was a founding member of the "Barmy Army" in 1994.

Ian has published both a book and charity magazine about rugby league in Wales, the latter based on his monthly columns for Rugby League World and Forty20 Magazines. He also co-wrote the history book of Australian youth TV series "Heartbreak High", published in 2021. This was then published in French in 2023.
