WHEELCHAIR WORLD CUP 3RD/4TH PLAYOFF

Wales have suddenly got a taste for beating Australia as, for the second time in a week and backing up their historic victory in the group games – the first by any Welsh side in an accredited international against the Aussies in the sport – they posted another dramatic triumph over the Green and Golds.

It came thanks to a late Scott Turner try, with barely two minutes left in a high quality contest.

It was an even first half as a self-coverted by from Rick Engles and a penalty from Jason Voncina saw the Aussies edge in front 8-6 with Jon Dunn grabbing a touchdown for the Welsh and Paul Craig potting the extras.

An exchange of penalties in the second half saw the lead change hands, Wales scrambling back in front with ten minutes to play when Jon Dunn freed Chris Dennett.

Discipline let the Welsh down as they were penalised for offside and Engles converted the penalty kick to level the scores for a third time.

With five minutes to play, Engles added another penalty to take the lead after the Welsh were punished for a ball steal.

However, Turner kept hounding to the last and a handling error gifted him the winning try as he managed to get a hand on the ball after the Aussies fumbled in-goal.

His persistence paid off, as he had previously twice claimed touchdowns in the same corner, but referee Richard Johnson ruled them out as he had his tag taken before he grounded the ball.
