Charles Staines started off as a youth player for his native Blaengarw side. He went on to play rugby union for Bridgend, the Welsh Guards and was a reserve for the Army. He turned professional as a 23-year old with Castleford in 1937 and helped them to a Yorkshire League title in 1938-39. He ended up with 170 appearances for the club, scoring 36 tries and kicking 83 goals before retiring in 1951.
