Doug John started off in rugby union with Pencoed and also played for Llanelli. He turned professional with the short-lived Bridgend side who played in the Welsh League out of the Brewery Field, who outbid the rugby union side for the lease in the late 1940s. He made one appearance for Wales, a Jubilee international against the British Empire, that wasn't capped. Outside of rugby, Doug was at the centre of public life in the Bridgend area for much of his senior life. He represented his home town as a councillor and he and Pam served as mayor and mayoress of Bridgend borough in 2003. He was later awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to the community. He died in Bridgend on August 9, 2022.
