Born and raised in Swindon, Paul qualifies for Wales through his heritage as his mother was born in Carmarthen and will soon qualify for Wales through residency following moving to the Rhondda area a number of years ago. Paul is a long-term sufferer of a neurological condition which causes attacks of debilitating cluster migraines and blurred vision which causes a loss in consciousness, these attacks can often come in large blocks where he will suffer a large number of attacks over a short period of time.

From a young age Paul played Rugby Union for teams in the Swindon area until retiring. He was first introduced to disability sport through his wife, former Wales Wheelchair RL head coach, Alana Sargent, who was also involved with Swindon St. George. He started off with the club in an admin role as he worked with their off-court team and as a volunteer before transitioning into a player. Following the folding of the Swindon team and a minor sabbatical from the sport, Paul returned to Wheelchair Rugby League in 2017 where he joined Hereford Harriers as well as becoming a fully qualified match official. Following the launch of Ebbw Rollers in 2020, Paul and was named their first ever captain and won Player Of The Match in the first ever game against North Wales Crusaders Celts. After this team was acquisitioned by West Wales Raiders, Paul became one of the first signings of the newly launched Torfaen Tigers Wheelchair side.
