Gwyn Williams was one of eight boys and four girls in the large clan from Taff's Well. All of the eight played rugby, with two of them, Bleddyn and Lloyd, eventually playing rugby union for Wales. Another of his brothers, Cenydd, played rugby league for St Helens. Gwyn Glyndwr Williams was often known as "the eldest and best" and his career was sadly cut short. He played for Cardiff RFC as a teenager in 1938, signing for Wigan that same season on borrowed time, squeezing in 32 matches before the outbreak of the Second World War. He would never play again. He decided not to play for a Combined Services XV with brother Bleddyn, instead joining friends in the Welsh Guards heading to North Africa. A few days later, on match day, he was carried off on a cart during the Battle of Longstop Hill. Gwyn slowly recovered, but was never to play again, and in uncomplaining pain for all his days. Bleddyn went on to captain Wales and fought off all attempts for Wigan to sign him. He died in Poole, Dorset on December 27, 1996, aged 78.
