David Treasure qualified for Wales through his grandmother Gwladys Shuttleworth from Llantrisant. The first of five Welsh appearances saw him score a try in the 12–7 defeat of England in the famous "Battle of Brisbane" in the 1975 World Cup. As a youngster he played both union and league and aged-18 he was the captain of the Yorkshire Copper Works' rugby union team (despite a ban on anyone playing rugby union if they had previously played rugby league). Bradford Northern was his first club, signing for them after scoring five trials in a trial game for their A side. He transferred to Oldham in November 1973 and his career ended in a game against his old club in 1977 when a Bradford prop sat on his knee, rupturing David's ACL. He worked in engineering after his playing, before eventually retiring in Spain.
