Melbourne Tierney started playing rugby with his home village club Tumble RFC after the second world war. He, along with Lyn Walters and Austin Jones, all turned professional with Belle Vue Rangers after their 1946 West Wales Cup Final against Amman United RFC at Stradey Park, Llanelli. He played 311 times for that club and holds their most consecutive appearances record, with 137-appearances from Saturday 23 September 1950 to Saturday 5 December 1953. He later played for Rochdale Hornets. He later worked as an engineer and remained in the north of England. He died from dementia in Stockport, Greater Manchester on 27 November 2014, at the age of 90.
