Dai Thomas started off in rugby union with Aberdare before turning professional with Dewsbury in 1906. He played there for one season and broke Dewsbury's "Tries In A Season" record with 40 tries scored in the 1906–07 season, and Dewsbury's "Tries In A Match" record with eight against Liverpool City on 13 April 1907. He played for Halifax in the 1907-08 season then went back to Wales when the new Mid-Rhondda side started in 1908. He also turned out for Yorkshire.
