Harry Smith played rugby union in Somerset, turning out for both Taunton and Cinderford as well as the county side. He turned professional with Ebbw Vale in 1908, playing regularly for the side until they were wound up in 1912. He then joined Batley, playing for that side until the outbreak of the War in 1914. At Batley, he played 41 games, scoring nine tries and kicking four goals.
