Born in 1883, Thomas John Paddison was captain of the first-ever rugby league match to be held in Wales, which was for Merthyr Tydfil against Oldham on September 7, 1907. He won a cap for the full Wales side while at Merthyr Tydfil in 1908 and also represented the Welsh League XIII in the 14-13 victory over Australia at Penydarren Park in Merthyr Tydfil on Tuesday 19 January 1909. He continued to play for Merthyr throughout their spell in the Northern Union. He started played rugby union for Glantawe and played one match for Swansea in 1904, against Neath. His Swansea career was primarily in the second XV for whom he played 15 matches between October 1904 and October 1905. He moved to Llanelli in November 1905 then to Merthyr RU in 1906 before turning professional with Broughton Rangers, moving back to Merthyr when the Northern Union club started there.
