Arthur Charles Lloyd started playing rugby union at Penarth RFC, where his performances earned him a reputation as one of the most promising backs in Wales. It was thought he'd soon win a cap for Wales RU but instead, he turned professional with Leeds for £400 in 1926. He turned out 125 times for the club and scored 56 tries. During that time he helped the club to win the Yorkshire League in 1927-28 and the Yorkshire Cup later that year. After Leeds signed international winger Stan Smith from Wakefield Trinity in January 1930, Lloyd asked to be put on the transfer list and joined York and it was during that time that he won his only Wales cap. He helped York reach the Challenge Cup final in 1931 only to have to leave the field on a stretcher because he suffered from a concussion. He later went to coach York and continued to live in the city until he died on March 10, 1992.
