Derek Howes, born in 1913, started his rugby at Llanelli before turning professional with Wakefield Trinity in 1945. He ended up playing for the club for eight years, scoring 45 tries and kicking one goal in his 179 appearances. He was part of the Wakefield side that won the 1946 Challenge Cup when they beat Wigan 13-12, and the 1951 Yorkshire Cup when they beat Keighley 17-3. He later played a season at Featherstone Rovers.
